2007 Teenager of the
Year Awarded to Bethesda Kiwanis-Sponsored Walt Whitman High School

Ashley Griswold was recently selected as the
“2007 Teenager of the Year” by the Kiwanis Clubs of Montgomery County,
Division 17.

Ashley, a 12th grader at Walt Whitman High School,
was nominated by the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda and selected from a field of
five nominees from area high schools. Nominees were evaluated on their
academic achievements, volunteer service, citizenship, and leadership
performance. The judging was done by volunteers of the Montgomery County
Police Department, Captain Betsy Davis and Lt. Porsha Jones.

The award was presented to Miss Griswold by Betty
Gardiner, Lt. Governor, Division 17, Capital District Kiwanis at the
Service Leadership Banquet held at the Leisure World Clubhouse. In making
the presentation, Mrs. Gardiner said, “We are proud to recognize Ashley
Griswold as ‘Teenager of the Year.’ She is an outstanding member of her
community volunteering at the Glen Echo Fire Department, National Cancer
Institute/NIH, and many other local groups. This well-rounded teenager has
amassed 1,212 community service hours to date.”

As winner on the Division Level, Ashley’s nomination
will be submitted to the District competition with other teenagers
throughout Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and DC. Ashley is the daughter of
Kettner and Dana Griswold of Bethesda.

Montgomery County Division 17 Kiwanis Clubs currently
sponsors 12 Kiwanis Key Clubs in local high schools, two Kiwanis Builders
Clubs in Middle Schools, and one K-Kids in an elementary school. There are
more than 1,000 members in these school-based Clubs. Students participate
weekly learning leadership skills and performing service work to improve
their communities.
