Age is a quality of mind.
If you've left your dreams behind, if hope is cold, if you no longer look ahead, if your ambitious fires are dead,
then you are old!
Pat Norry, Vice President led the Pledge and Marlyana Proctor led singing our patriotic song. Rev. John Walker offered the prayer. Sixteen people were present. Guests introduced were Dave Benway, Lt. Governor of our Division 17, Nina Yalla from RICA and Kimberly Newman from YMCA. Past Lt. Governor Marvin Jackson also visited our group and urged us to buy tickets for the upcoming Comedy Night which will benefit the Miracle League. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 2 and be sure to support this fun adventure with cash bar, silent auction, live auction, buffet dinner and two hours of laughter. Tracy Miller, is a Director in our club as well as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Arlington, VA. She is Director of Community Development for the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington. One of her major responsibilities is putting on the annual Turkey Chase on Thanksgiving Day. It is the YMCA Bethesda-Chevy Chase's largest fundraiser. She is interested in targeting the Bethesda community and businesses in becoming more involved with Kiwanis. She pointed out that besides giving back to the community, as a Kiwanian "we have fun" and we meet and make new friends by working on different projects and meeting for lunch twice a month. |
Robert G. Brewer, Jr., known as Robby, has been a member of the club since 1978. Involved in every facet of philanthropy from the early days he explained that we have now created a really special project -- the Miracle League of Montgomery County. This new partnership between private and public entities allows children with disabilities to play baseball on a specialized field. It should be a huge attraction for families and business owners to become involved with Kiwanis. Indeed, our focus will be less broad and as Kiwanians we owe our loyalty to its success. |

We are proud to have as our guest speaker Vivian Bass, CEO of the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes. In 2006 she was named the Washingtonian of the year for her work with JFGH. The Jewish Foundation for Group Homes is a non-sectarian, 501(c)(3), non-profit organization, providing support and services for individuals with disabilities in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Ms. Bass explained the the organization enhances the independence, dignity, choice, and community inclusion of adults with disabilities. JFGH is in its 28th year and has 23 homes in 71 locations. It serves about 180 people with a wide range of disabilities. They are independent and don't require supervision, they can live in their own apartment or home. She explained about the MOST program (Meaningful Opportunities for Successful Transitions) which is an innovative one year transitional day program for young adults with the goal of helping individuals make a successful transition into appropriate employment, vocational or day programs. Group homes have no mortgages, no snow days, and they look like any ordinary normal home. For more information go to their website: WWW.jfgh.org. A wonderful presentation and so inspirational!
