Meeting Recaps: November through December, 2010
As you all know our club is now meeting on the second and fourth Thursday of the month. November and December had many holidays so this issue of Kee-Notes will be a recap of events for the two months. On Thursday, November 11, we had 9 from our club participating in the 51st Annual Veteran's Day Observance at Woodmont Triangle. This event is co-sponsored by our club and the American Legion Fitzgerald Cantrall Post #105. Under the organization of our member Richard Ruprecht and led by Master of Ceremonies Robert Cressy, it was very inspiring to see the color guard, local dignitaries and our President Jim Leder's presentation of a floral tribute in memory of our fallen military heroes. Following the event, several of us had lunch with Kiwanians from Wheaton-Silver Spring at Rock Bottom Brewery. The next event in November was the Annual Rotary-Kiwanis Luncheon on Tuesday, November 23 at Kenwood Golf & Country Club. This annual event is held on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving each year and the clubs alternate hosting the event. We had 14 Bethesda member participate in this annual affair.
In December, we had an inter-club at the Kiwanis Club of Rockville's Annual Pancake Breakfast held on Saturday, December 4 at the Montgomery College Cafeteria. The food was delicious and they made several thousand dollars serving sausages, pancakes, juice and coffee, as well as raffles and a silent auction. We had another inter-club at the Wheaton-Silver Spring Annual Holiday Luncheon held on Wednesday, December 8 at Argyle Country Club. Entertainment was provided by Blair High School's choral group and everyone left with good feelings of fellowship and holiday spirit.

At the Joint Annual Rotary-Kiwanis luncheon, Past President Jeannie Smith, dressed as the YMCA Turkey mascot gives President Jim Leder a special Miracle League baseball bat. Besides leading our club as president, Jim is also the President of the Miracle League of Montgomery County. Germantown, Maryland will be the site for this county-wide project to allow disabled youth to play baseball on a specialized surface. The YMCA Turkey Trot was held on Thanksgiving Day with several club members volunteering. |
Attending the Wheaton-Silver Spring Annual Holiday Luncheon were prospective member Marlayna Proctor, Pat Tiede, Secretary; Jeanne Smith, Past President, and Bob Cressy, Past Governor and very important photographer! Inter-clubbing is such a great way to see how other clubs do things as well as bonding with other Kiwanians. It only takes 4 from our club to have an inter-club and you should try it in the new year!! |
Our Annual Holiday Party was held on Thursday, December 9 at Alfio's in Chevy Chase. The Kiwanis Club of Potomac also joined our group and we had delicious food, flowing wine and desserts presented by Jeanne Smith. The fun began when we started our gift exchange. Items were stolen, returned, and stolen again and everyone went home happy. Pictures will follow in a later issue. On Tuesday, December 14, three of us almost made an inter-club at The Kiwanis Club of Potomac's Holiday Luncheon held at Normandie Farms in Potomac. Peter Hebert, author of "Mortgaged and Armed" was the guest speaker talking about the sub prime mortgage meltdown, the panic of 2008, and the new Wall Street reform bill and how these relate to all Americans. The financial sector has over relied on technology, poor judgment, and is stuck on autopilot. Most people have no idea as to what's in the new Wall Street financial reform bill. He has researched the bill, and covered it in his book from which he will be speaking. On Thursday, December 16, we had our last meeting of the year at Tragara. Thirteen were scheduled to attend but only 9 made it after the streets were dusted with our first snow storm. Your secretary crept home on Old Georgetown Road and it took 60 minutes to go 4 miles!! But it was worth it. Shira Oler presided over the meeting (President Jim wants everyone to have a turn) and the attendees deserve to be mentioned -- Bob Cressy, Bob Gradle (who will be leaving for the next several months to sunny Florida), Jim Leder, Shira Oler, Bill Pennington, Marlayna Proctor, Ben Schlesinger, Pat Tiede and Jeanne Smith.

' We inducted a new member Marlayna Proctor of RICA-Regional Institute for Children & Adolescents - one of our long-time supported club projects. Marlayna was inducted by Past Governor Bob Cressy. She was sponsored by Jeanne Smith and Jim Leder. Marlayna gave an overview of RICA. She also worked with Debbie Van Horn, another past president who now is pursuing nursing school. Marlayna has two growing boys and is very interested in the Miracle League. We are very proud of our newest member. |

Sad News:
Our Lieutenant Governor for 2010-2011, Joyce Sharon sent this message out on December 18, "It is with great sadness that I am informing you that a dear friend and very special Kiwanian, DPLG Bernie Gardiner, passed away early this morning. We will always remember Bernie as he was admired and respected for his generosity and kindness, and his dedication and commitment to the values and ideals of Kiwanis. He was truly, our Mr. Kiwanis. Bernie was devoted to his family and very proud of his wife, Betty and children, Doug, Billy and Sharon and grandchildren. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time. Details of Bernie's funeral arrangements will be forthcoming." After distributing this message to our members, Past Lt. Governor Ben Schlesinger wrote, "What very sad news. Bernie was a hero of mine, and of so many of us too - he was kind of an inventor, of ways to do better! He would push us, challenge us, to do as much as we could for Kiwanis and for the kids we support. Then came that approving look and smile - Bernie was irreplaceable, dedicated and much beloved - we have lost somebody very special! Our hearts and prayers go to Betty and the wonderful family'. Board member Jim Aylor wrote, "what very sad news indeed. We and I have lost a very dear friend. He and I spoke a lot about family, Kiwanis, health issues, and our beloved St. Johns High School What an inspiration he was to all us Kiwanians. My thoughts and prayers to Betty and their family.
Speaker:
Shira Oler introduced our guest speaker, Patty Guay-Berry, Suburban Hospital's clinical dietician. Patty gave healthy advice on weight control during the holidays. She praised the Caesar salad and salmon with spinach that was served for lunch today. She suggested to eat mindfully, don't skip meals, look at food as "medicine" and eat smaller portions on smaller plates. Eat like a king in the morning, eat smaller portions as the day goes on, and eat like a pauper for dinner. We all know it is important to eat 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and consume whole grains and good carbohydrates that provide energy and help keep you full. It is important to weigh yourself at least once per week and keep track of your intake in a journal. Reading food labels and ingredients is also important. Patty suggested that during the holiday parties, having regular water between alcoholic beverages is a good thing. It was a very interesting presentation.
Shira Oler won the 50/50 and returned it back to the club funds.
Patricia Tiede, Editor for the Day
