Weekly Newsletter of the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda, Maryland

Serving the Community Since 1945

Meeting Date: October 28, 2010

In keeping with President Jim Leder's goal to give everyone a chance to be President for the day, Ben Schlesinger. past president (1996-97), past Div. Lieutenant Governor (2000-01) opened the meeting with the pledge, singing of My Country 'Tis of Thee, and Reverend John Walker led us in prayer.  We had 15 people for lunch and many thanks to Ben Schlesinger for leading us today. Nice to see again John Walker, Ben Schlesinger, George Patterson, Tracy Miller, Shira Oler, and  Ann Black.

Announcements:

Bob Cressy talked about the LobsterFest. The Potomac Club is sponsoring sale of fresh live Maine Lobsters. Order before November 6 and pick up November 13th at parking lot of A.N. Miller office located at the corner of Falls Road and River Road. The lobsters are $13.00 each -- call Nancy Cressy at 301-340-9265 and make check payable to Kiwanis Club of Potomac. Nancy's address is 12409 Frost Court, Potomac, MD  20854.  President Jim Leder needs your help to act as President for at least one meeting- if you don't volunteer he will be calling you to sign up.

Ben talked about his recent trips to China to visit his son who is a Fulbright scholar and has become fluent in Chinese. Beijing is modern city with skyscrapers, bad traffic with lots of cars (few bikes). He described China as a nice minimum security prison -- they censor wireless internet (no New York Times available as an example). His son recommended to eat from street vendors rather than purchase any wrapped food in a store -- the vendors  know their customers and take great care to keep food safe. Bribes are helpful to get goods and services such as the internet. Most people do not speak English even though English is taught in the  schools. Ben related that he and his wife got into a cab and the driver noted they spoke English and he popped a cassette tape into the player and voice spoke in English: "Welcome to your cab your driver's name is ......" and of course the driver did not understand a word from the tape. Fascinating talk.
