Meeting Date: October 14, 2010

President Jim Leder opened the meeting promptly at noon.   Bill Pennington led us in the the pledge to our flag, Marv Jackson led in singing God Bless America, and Rev. John Walker led us in prayer.  Marv Jackson, immediate past Lt. Governor of Division 17 and his wife Liz Jackson were welcomed.  Leder announced that at our Induction Dinner last week, Pat Tiede was the recipient of the George F. Hixson Fellow Award and The Distinguished Service Award presented by Marv Jackson on behalf of her work in Division 17.  Also at the DCM meeting held last Monday, she received The Capital District Kiwanis Foundation Award as a Life Member. Jim offered a thought to start the meeting.

Don't hog your journey through life, it is not just for you. 

You can take your business and shove it into your pocket and take it to your grave, or you can help someone. 

It is your choice.  As Kiwanians, our choice is to help someone!!

Announcements:

Richard Ruprecht and Jeanne Smith, advisors to our Key Clubs will be meeting at Leisure World  this afternoon.  Ruprecht reminded us that Key Clubs are unique to Kiwanis.  Our club has an opportunity on Saturday, October 23 to participate with the Kiwanis Club of Potomac at their Potomac Day in Potomac Village.  We hope to have a booth advertising for members as well as The Miracle League.  Contact Jim Leder at 301-983-1774 if you are interested in participating.  Jim passed out copies of The Community Builder, a quarterly publication of the Maryland-National Capital Building Industry Association and the Home Builders Care Foundation.  Front page story featured THE MIRACLE LEAGUE!!

Jim Leder HD for Pat Tiede, secretary, the Miracle League and Jeanne Smith as immediate past president.  Marv and Liz Jackson HD for the success of our club under President Leder.  Richard Ruprecht HD for our speaker Rebecca Trupp from Suburban Hospital.  Pat Tiede  5HD for Jim Leder, Jeanne Smith, the speaker, being a breast cancer survivor and the awards she received.  A total of  $18 HD were given all for new president, old president and the guest speaker.

SPEAKER

Shira Oler introduced our guest speaker, Rebecca Trupp, RN.  She is the Oncology Nurse Navigator for Breast and Gyn Oncology at Suburban Hospital. Ms. Trupp has spent the bulk of her 19-year nursing career in women’s health care and understands the diverse needs of women and their families. What is a patient navigator?  What is a patient navigator?  She helps cancer patients, especially those who are underserved and/or uninsured, get good care and the proper screening.  Economics plays a major role in access to care and after diagnosis, she helps patients get connected to state programs. She also provides psycho-social counseling.  She thanked the Suburban Hospital Foundation who help by providing the resources for those who need it. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month this was a very appropriate presentation.
