Weekly Newsletter of the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda, Maryland

Serving the Community Since 1945

Meeting Dates: July 8, 2010

Treasurer Gary Boswell opened the meeting promptly at noon.  Pat Tiede led us in the Pledge, Bob Gradle led us in singing God Bless America and Debbie Van Horn gave the prayer.  It would be nice if everyone arrived at 12 noon, so we could have our opening before we sit down to eat.  It is interesting that some people are always early and some people are always late.

It was great to see Jeff Morrison our lunch meeting as well as Debbie Van Horn's guest, Marlayna Proctor from RICA.    Jim Leder attended the International Kiwanis meeting in Las Vegas, NV last week.

Debra Yakubik VanHorn

Debbie Van Horn  will be leaving RICA after serving as Director of Community Resources and Development for the past 19 years.  She will be pursuing a nursing degree from Montgomery College, which will take her 2 years to complete.  Becoming a nurse has been a long time dream of Debbie's and she is looking forward to this new chapter in her life.  She is planning to stay in touch with us and participate in Kiwanis events as her time and studies permit.  She will forward her new email address to us so that we may stay in touch.  She has been a member of our club since January 2002 and served as secretary from 2002-03, President-Elect from 2003-04, and President from 2005-2006.

Happy Dollars:

Jim Leder HD  for his attendance at the Kiwanis Convention in Las Vegas.  He went to a Miracle League game but it was called due to weather.  Gary Boswell HD for his auto-train trip to Orlando, where he bravely endured a line for 7 hours to attend the opening of the Harry Potter Exhibit at Universal Orlando Resort. What Gary won't do for his young son!!!  Debbie Van Horn HD for guest Marlayna Proctor who will be taking Debbie's place at RICA and for all the wonderful things the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda has done.  Bob Gradle HD for Gary enduring the auto-train trip to Florida -- it was like riding a roller coaster.  Pat Norry HD having experienced vertigo at one time (a little like coming off a roller coaster ride).  Jeff Morrison HD for the first birthday of his son.  Bob Cressy HD for Jim Leder's attendance at the Las Vegas Convention.  Bob missed it this year as he was attending his mother-in-law's 85th birthday in Canada.  He also presided over a ceremony held at the Promenade on June 30 honoring past member Bob Vigderhouse who recently received the Purple Heart for his bravery in the Battle of the Bulge.  Pat Tiede also attended and was impressed with Bob's knowledge of the World War II battle.  Bob Cressy will also be participating in the Damascus Parade where a new club is being formed.  Of course he will be riding in his Jaguar!
