Serving the Community Since 1945

Meeting Date: May 20, 2010

President Jeanne Smith opened the meeting and Bob Gradle led us in the pledge and George Patterson led us in singing God Bless America with Rev. Bill Hague offering the prayer.  Jim Aylor's brother passed away and  everyone was asked to remember Jim and his family in their prayers. It was good to see Bill Hague and John Walker.  Our club is very fortunate to have two fine men to guide us spiritually.  Scott Brewer was welcomed back  from cycling in the Outer Banks.

Student Leadership Banquet:

This special report came from Richard Ruprecht and is worthy to be published in our weekly Kee-Notes.   "Thursday night was the Annual Division 17 Key Club Banquet at Leisure World and it was a great night for Kiwanis! Our Jeanne Smith did an excellent job orchestrating the program last night, but more importantly, she has done a wonderful job with the Key Clubs at Blair HS and Whitman HS all year! Thanks to Ann Black and Bob Cressy, Bethesda Kiwanis had an “interclub” as far as attendance, but I truly wish more of Bethesda Club members could have attended the event to meet and support the wonderful Key Clubbers from Division 17.  You would have been extra proud to be affiliated with Kiwanis if you would have seen the positive effect that Key Club is having on all these students!  If you think interest in Key Club is waning, you just need to get informed and involved.  Did you know that there were more Key Clubbers attending the District Convention this year than ever before?  One of the students attending our Key Leader program said last night that it was “an awesome experience that she will never forget!” Our outgoing Lt. Governor said that joining Key Club was one of the best decisions she ever made! Did you know that former Bethesda Kiwanis members Nancy Cressy and Kelly Boswell are active Kiwanis Advisors to Key Clubs at Churchill HS (a new Club) and Sherwood HS where this years Lt. Gov. is from? Did you know Jeannie’s sister Carla Daly is a Key Club advisor?  Ask any of these fine Kiwanians and they will tell you that getting involved with Key Club is very gratifying and a lot of fun!"  Ruprecht adds--Please consider asking Jeanne how you could help support either the Blair or Whitman Key Clubs because I cannot imagine her continuing to be an advisor to TWO clubs at the same time!  I will let you know what opportunities we have with the Walter Johnson HS Club next year as we continue our efforts to improve interaction with WJ and its new faculty advisors.  Congratulations to Jeanne Smith for a great effort on the banquet and to all our advisors (and spouses) for their successful service this year!

George Patterson, President of the Foundation presents a check to Shira Oler, Director of Leadership giving, Suburban Hospital Foundation.

The Bethesda Kiwanis Foundation presented a check for $4500 to Shira Oler for the Suburban Hospital Foundation.  The funds will be used for breast cancer education for high school students. Several years ago the Foundation made a grant of $50,000 over several years to Suburban for a pediatric room at the Emergency Room of Suburban.

Happy Dollars:

Shira Oler HD for being our speaker.  Pat Tiede HD for her 9 month old great granddaughter who will be visiting her next weekend from Colorado Springs. With a twinkle in her eye she said that her great grand daughter is cuter than Bob Gradle's great granddaughter -- well we know they both are pretty special.  Tracy Miller HD just for being happy.  Scott Brewer HD for his bike trip, he also noted that the Kiwanis Club of Leisure World was formed in 1967.  (We had an inter-club at their Charter Day Luncheon last week).  John Walker HD he was happy to see Scott Brewer.    Bob Gradle HD for Pat Tiede’s visit with her great granddaughter.

Speaker:

Our own Shira Oler talked to us about Suburban Hospital's  Purpose, Progress and Promise Campaign.  Suburban hospital has 228 beds and most of them are semi-private. The goal is to have the same number of beds but to make each room private. Also the operating rooms (OR’s) are not big enough for all the modern scanning and surgical systems that modern medicine requires so new ORs will be built. Patients often complain about parking so a new parking garage will also be built. The projected cost of the program is $250 million.  $85 million will come from private sources with the remainder from loans. The timeline is for construction to begin 2012 with completion in 2015. Our Bethesda Kiwanis Club Pediatric Room which is part of the Emergency Room WILL NOT BE AFFECTED!  Shira answered questions from club members.

Bill Pennington won the 50/50.
