Weekly Newsletter of the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda, Maryland

Serving the Community Since 1945

Meeting Date: April 22, 2010

President Jeanne Smith opened the meeting with the Pledge.  Ben Schlesinger  led us in singing  God Bless America and Bill Hague led us in prayer. It was good to see everyone in the upstairs room at Tragara.  Gary Boswell is finished with tax season and Ben Schlesinger is back from is world-wide travels.  Visitor Terri Romani accepted the $500 check from Richard Ruprecht for the upcoming Walter Johnson Prom Breakfast.  When that activity started many years ago and Gary Boswell was the liaison, the budget was $88.00.  The breakfast allows all graduating seniors a safe place to go after the prom.  Thank you to Terri for working on this worthwhile project and for bringing tee-shirts from last year and home made cookies to our club.

Happy Dollars:

Ben Schlesinger HD's he would always rather be at the club instead of traveling the globe and it's always great to see him.  Richard Ruprecht HD for the Carnival of Chocolates that is sponsored by The Dwelling Place.  Held on Friday, April 30 from 7:30  to 10 p.m., the event will be held at a new site -- VisArts at 155 Gibbs Street in Rockville.  Drivers are needed to deliver the desserts and we will have several tickets available for those who wish to attend the event where you can enjoy a wide array of chocolate confections and hors d'oeuvres donated by the area's top restaurants, bakeries and caterers.  Champagne will be served as well as a Silent Auction.  Cash bar is available.  Jim Leder HD for the Division 17 Fundraiser being held this Sunday, April 25.  Ann Black HD -- she is glad to see everyone particularly Ben Schlesinger and Richard RuprechtGary Boswell HD for finally being out of hibernation and at the end of another tax season.  Pat Tiede HD for the wonderful fund-raising event put on by Suburban Hospital at the Strathmore Music Center.  Shira Oler worked very hard on it.  Another HD for Gary Boswell's return.

Speaker:

Shira Oler introduced Yvonne D'Arcy, who is a nurse practioner at Suburban Hospital.  She chose a career in pain management after she fell in her driveway and broke her leg.  About 80 percent of senior patients at Suburban have chronic daily pain.  By the year 2030, one in five patients will be over the age of 65.  Yvonne talked about myths and how untreated pain can lead to depression and social isolation.  Pain is treatable and shingles is one of the most painful diseases the elderly can get.  Besides pharmacological treatments (drugs), pain can be treated by acupuncture, bio feedback, Reki, music, humor, massage and reflexology therapy.  A very interesting discussion followed with members telling of their methods of stopping pain.

Ben Schlesinger won the 50/50 and donated it back to the club.

Pat Tiede,  Editor for the Day.
