President Jeanne Smith opened the meeting at Tragara's.  Stacy Miller led in the Pledge and George Patterson led in singing of God Bless America.  Bill Hague gave the prayer.

Announcements:

Former member Bob Vigderhouse was admitted to Sibley Hospital yesterday. He is on the sixth floor and visitors are welcome. January 28,2010 Christ Church at 6:30 PM we will be hosting a combined meeting Olney Kiwanis and any other division 17 member to kick off the Division 17 fundraiser for the Miracle League Field. The regular lunch meeting of our club is cancelled for that day.

 

We sang Happy Birthday for Debbie Van Horn.

Pat Norry and Tracy Miller were inducted into the Board of Directors of the club by past Lt. Governors, Jim Leder and Bob Cressy. 

 

Happy dollars: Jeanne Smith: HD for Shira Oler who produced colorful packet for Miracle League fundraising. All members should take a few and show them to friends/colleagues or mail to prospective donors. John Ratnavale- HD as he found a parking space  Pat Tiede- HD for Elinor Stoler who has her arm in a sling but is recovering, also HD for Shira and Jim for the miracle league packet. Bob Cressy- HD for the New Year. Shira Oler- HD for Jim Leder who did much of the work on the miracle league packet. Tracy Nelson- HD for DebbieVanHorn birthday.   Pat Norrie- HD for Tracy Nelson as new board member. Also for Shira Oler who is a talented flower arranger- Pat won a flower arrangement from Shira from Silent auction a year ago and finally asked Shira for the arrangement and was thrilled with the beauty and   how long it lasted.  John Walker- HD for Bob Vigderhouse.

 

We had no speaker so the club board of directors began their meeting.

 

Pat Norrie won the 50/50 and donated it to the house fund.

Guest speaker Kenneth R. J. Hartman  led us in the pledge, Jeff Morrison led us in song and Shira Oler gave a very appropriate prayer. We were glad to see Ben Schlesinger back from his extensive travels and Robby Brewer who has given so many hours for the implementation of the first Miracle League in Montgomery County.  He reported that on December 8 the Montgomery County Council approved the Capital Improvements Program Amendment that allows the Miracle Field to be built in addition to Parks Department’s youth baseball field.  The design work is coming along on schedule.  We just need…………money! Tracy Miller reported that the YMCA Turkey Chase was a great success with over 8,797 runners and 300 volunteers.   •                6:30p.m. DIVISON 17 KICKOFF  for MIRACLE LEAGUE.  Jim Leder  will throw out

                   the first pitch for the year.  He will introduce his managers and players for

                   Division 17, talk strategy and introduce his handout for donors that was created

                   by Shira and Jim.  This evening meeting was designed for  those members who have

                   difficulty making the luncheons.  We hope  to have 100% attendance from

                   Bethesda members.

Ben Schlesinger HD  for the memory of Jeannette Stabler, member of Leisure World Kiwanis and well known to all Kiwanians for her passion and good works for the organization.  She passed away last month.  Bob Cressy HD in memory of Len Maxwell who was an outstanding member of our club in the 80's.  Jim Leder had HD's for Shira Oler who has been working on a presentation package for the Miracle League, Jeanne Smith who worked on creating the ornament presented at Fox News. Pat Tiede for making Miracle League calling cards, Grace Fielder for designing the field and Robby Brewer for his many many hours spent in meetings with Montgomery County officials.  Shira Oler HD for Jim's great job on Fox News.  Pat Tiede HD for our guest speaker Ken Hartman and the others working on the Miracle League.  It was good to see everyone so happy during this holiday season.

Ken Hartman, Director of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center

Ken Hartman is the Director of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center serving the neighborhoods of Bethesda, Cabin John, Friendship Heights, Chevy Chase, Garrett Park, Glen Echo, North Bethesda, Potomac and Rockville.  Ken explained the newest endeavor, The Bethesda Youth Initiative, which includes the Bethesda Teen Council. The Council is made up of six students who live or attend high school in downtown Bethesda. Hartman said that new efforts are underway to expand the Teen Council to 15 members and for the Council to also advise the County on a variety of local issues including a new Teen Center. A Teen Center will be a place where youth can gather every Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. The location is at 4805 Edgemoor Drive. The center will have games, information about teen jobs, internships, tutoring and light refreshments. The Kiwanis Club of Bethesda will be giving the Teen Center some financial support as well as hands-on participation.

 

The 50/50 was won by Pat Tiede and returned to the club.
