Speaker:

Good friend and colleague, Rev. John Walker, retired Methodist Pastor introduced Rev. Dr. William Hague, Pastor of Christ Church Parish in Kensington, MD.  Bill has been an honorary member of Kiwanis since October 1990.  During this summer, Bill took 36 parishioners on a pilgrimage to Israel (the Holy Land).  He illustrated how there is a difference between a pilgrimage and being a tourist.  The 36 members on the trip were in Jerusalem which is one square mile where there are areas concentrated by Jews at the Wailing Wall, three  blocks down was the Holy Sepulcher where Jesus was crucified and then there was the Muslim Dome. The whole world is looking at this one square mile of Jerusalem where three different cultures live side by side and do share many things and they do have common roots. All three areas exuded a deep sense of faith, confusion, and the belief in a power greater than all. There was a feeling of relying on a presence, a sense of love and caring for each other.  Hague mentioned that a very good book to read is The Lemon Tree :  An Arab, A Jew and the Heart of the Middle East by Sandy Tolan.  The book fills in all the gaps and answers questions about the Middle Eastern conflicts. From the trip, Hague got a feeling of hope that these three groups could live together and that there truly is hope for the next generation.  Hope comes in different forms -- mainly in charity for all people, medicines distributed to all people, medical doctors giving up their time to do cornea transplants--to Jews, Palestinians, and Christians.  Charitable giving gives new life and hope. We need to hear more talks like this.
