Editor's note: Bill Pennington faithfully comes to each and every meeting. Congratulations Bill, it's great to have you at our meetings. It was also noted that a few of our members attended the funeral service for deceased Honorary member, Roy M. Miller. Jim Leder reported that our newest returning member Jeff Morrison gave a lovely singing tribute to Roy at the service.
Announcements:
Gary Boswell gave an update on the upcoming Golf Tournament. 35 golfers are signed up. We still need program advertisements and hole sponsors. Pat Tiede reported on her trip to the Kiwanis Capital District Convention in Dover, Delaware. She enjoyed meeting old friends from the district. Bob Cressy took photos of many of the participants and they can be seen in the current issue of the E-Builder. Jim Leder reported on the Miracle League - we need to raise about $1.5 million before next spring. Other important meeting scheduled for September are: Board of Directors' Meeting on Tuesday, September 8 at the Bethesda YMCA Ayrlawn Building at 6:30 p.m. A DCM Meeting on Monday, September 14 at Leisure World at 6:30 p.m. A Bethesda Foundation Meeting on Monday September 21 at Hunter's Inn in Potomac at 6:30 p.m. Immediately following that meeting will be a Miracle League Meeting at Hunter's Inn. Members were encouraged to attend the Kiwanis Potomac Club's Redskin Tail-Gate Party. It starts at 12 noon and will be at the Seneca Creek State Park, Doe Pavilion at 11950 Clopper Road in Gaithersburg. Bring your own beer and wine and feast on hamburgers and hot dogs cooked to order. RSVP to Jerry Joseph at 202-288-1696. The fee is $30 and reservations are needed. This is a good opportunity to inter-club and socialize. Proceeds will benefit local charities. | Robby Brewer presents a $1,000 check from the Foundation to Bruce Adams, the program's overseer and director of the county's Office of Community Partnerships | The winning numbers are written on the little ducks in the pool snagged by two Key Clubbers and two District Foundation past presidents, Roger Diehl and Morris Long. |
Speaker:
Robby Brewer introduced our speaker Bruce Adams who has been to our club many times. Bruce has made many contributions to our county, including former Montgomery County Council Member, a founding member of Bethesda Big Train, college baseball stadium. He also as been a founder of the Lazarus Leadership Fellows Program. This involves high school juniors or seniors who participate in the six month program. The fellows work alongside groups such as Bethesda Urban Partnership to experience what these different groups do. The most important part of the program is each fellow has to design or create their own service project. They cannot just work with some organization. One student who loves the theatre wrote a play that was performed for young people in the area. The fellows get 200 hours of community service or they can receive a stipend of $750 to compensate them for not working at a paying summer job. Robby Brewer presented a check of $1,000 to Bruce for the Lazarus Leadership Program.
Pat Norry won the 50/50 and donated it back to the club.
