Weekly Newsletter of the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda, Maryland
Serving the Community Since 1945
Meeting Date: May 14, 2009
Past Lt. Governor Ben Schlesinger led us in the pledge and God Bless America and John Walker gave the prayer. President Jim Leder welcomed back Harry Lowe, Bob Gradle, Ben Schlesinger and special guest Past. Lt. Governor John Tyner.
Additional Announcements:
We will not meet at Tragara on Thursday, May 28, instead we will meet at the proposed site of the Miracle League Baseball Field in Germantown -- near the Soccer Complex on Schaeffer Road. Box lunches will be provided for a nominal fee. Further details will follow. Thanks to Jim Leder who has persisted for thee years to find an appropriate site that was agreeable to the County.
The Kiwanis Club of Bethesda Golf Tournament will be at Bretton Woods on Friday, September 25. .Golf Tournament Chair, Bernadeen Zivkovic will hold a meeting on Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 PM at Hard Times Cafe at 4920 Del Ray Avenue in Bethesda. The purpose will be to talk about our golf tournament. Anyone with suggestions and/or who wants to be on the committee may attend. It is not too early to think about inviting friends to join your foursome and to contact prospects to buy advertisements in the program or to sponsor holes or greens. THIS IS OUR ONLY FUNDRAISER and we should have 100 percent participation by all our members. If you don't play golf, there are other things you can do to make it successful.
RICA Graduation will be on Friday, June 5 at 10 AM. Our club supports RICA with scholarships for graduating seniors. This is a good way to see how these kids have overcome many difficulties to graduate. It is an inspiration for all to see. Also RICA and the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton-Silver Spring will have their golf tournament on Monday, June 8. We can support them by playing golf at 12 noon or having dinner at 5 PM at Montgomery Village Golf Club, 119550 Montgomery Village Avenue.
Happy Dollars:
Pat Tiede HD for being happy to be part of our club, she loves the fellowship and the generosity of the members. John Tyner HD also glad to be a guest and for the RICA golf tournament. Another HD for the best team in hockey -- Pittsburg Penquins (although there was groaning from the audience about this). Bob Cressy HD for his recently completed training at Fort Sill. Bernadeen Zivkovic HD for the Capitals run through post season. Scott Brewer HD glad to be back from his l o n g bike ride! Ben Schlesinger HD glad to be back, also HD for his old boss John Tyner. Bob Gradle HD for Jim Leder's persistence with Miracle League and for the devoted work Key Club advisors Dick Ruprecht and Jeanne Smith do with their clubs. Jim Leder happy to be a Kiwanian.
President Jim Leder requested members to write "the reason you joined Kiwanis." Following is the second of four comments received thus far (paraphrased for space reasons).
am passionate about being in Kiwanis. I wanted to be a part of a group of like-minded people who value serving their community. Kiwanis has provided me with the opportunity to serve. It doesn't feel like work, volunteering always makes me feel happy and fulfilled and my son admires the work we all do. I've even heard rumblings from him about switching high schools when he starts so he can be a part of the Key Club. I believe that our future is in our children, and the Kiwanis mission to prioritize our young people matches my personal vision. I want to serve my club as a member with grace, integrity, and an open mind. I want to learn how to better myself through connections with other members, projects, volunteering, and networking. I like the warm fuzzy feeling that I get when I have my Kiwanis hat on. I proudly choose to leave it on and to represent our club in all aspects of life.I
Bernadeen Zivkovic, joined 2008
Our speaker was Past Lt. Governor John Tyner who is also President of the Rockville Club. He talked about club growth and one aspect to think about is the personal approach to a potential member -- to tell them why you joined and what you like about the club. Invite one of your friends to our service projects such as making and serving dinner at Children's Inn at NIH. Anyone who wants to serve the community is a potential member. Our club is dwindling and we need some new members.
Bill Pennington won the 50/50.
