Meeting Date: December 18,  2008

________________________________________________________________________________

The last meeting of the year was opened by President Debbie Van Horn with the pledge, God Bless America, and Scott Brewer offered the prayer.

Guests:

We had a room full of guests from the John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA) today. Diana Jamieson, Eva Marie Kenealy, and Jim Polimadei, RICA staff members. Debbie Van Horn has the pleasure of working with these young men through the various RICA programs.  Plus we had 8 students from RICA. Also guest Cody Burton, a freshman at Princeton and was Teenager of the Year, received a $500 book card from us to help pay for his books at Princeton.  Cody was accompanied by his girlfriend Jasleen Salwan who attends Brown University.

Happy Dollars:

Ben Schlesinger HD for the RICA student guests today. Debbie Van Horn 11 HD for all the guests from RICA.  Bernadeen Zivkovic 2 HD who is proud and glad to be part of our club.  Jeanne Smith HD for new member Bernadeen who is so enthusiastic about the club, and another HD for Cody Burton.

Program:

The young men in RICA spoke to our group about their participation in  recent activities. The group went to a Barnes and Noble book store and each one bought a book (not a text book, but a book on a topic of their choosing). They also established a library at their cottage with books bought on their recommendation. Students from other cottages heard about their library and began asking about borrowing the books. The students are in charge of the library and  keep track of who has borrowed the book with penalties to those who fail to bring the book back. Another trip which they loved involved a trip to the Smith Center (one of Montgomery County's outdoor recreation facilities).  The outdoor ed center helps groups to get to know each other better and to co-operate in physical tasks such as wall climbing. The activities the students engaged in that day helped them develop, enhance, and maintain good human relations among themselves and with their teachers.  One  life lesson all the students learned is that even if you don't like someone you have to respect them. Finally they thanked Kiwanis for supporting RICA (our club donates money specifically for scholarships for graduating high school students from RICA).

Cody Burton thanked our club for  supporting him. At Princeton, he volunteers to work at the local Fire Department as an EMT eight hours a week and loves it. He was surprised by how intellectual the students are even to the point of thinking up a version of twenty questions while they were on a hike along the Appalachian trail.

Our next meeting will be on January 8 following the holidays.

SEASONS GREETINGS TO ALL

Scott Brewer won the 50/50 and donated it back to the club.
