Weekly Newsletter of the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda, Maryland

Serving the Community Since 1945

Meeting Date: October 2, 2008

The Kiwanis administrative year begins October 1st ending September 30th, 2009, and the Kiwanis Club of Bethesda kicked it off with a well attended flourish at Alfio’s Italian Restaurant in Chevy Chase on October 2nd.  Now Immediate Past President Liz Quinn presided in her closing ceremony. Distinguished Past Lieutenant Governor 2006-2007 Betty Gardiner was the installing officer for the evening and she brought six Wheaton-Silver Spring Kiwanians from her club on an ‘interclub plus’ with her.  Thank you all.

Bethesda will employ a unique twist on the role of Club President with four seasoned past presidents sharing the role for 2008-2009.  Beginning October 1st, Debbie Van Horn will preside for three months, followed by Jeanne Smith in January, February and March, Past President and Past Lieutenant Governor Jim Leder in April through June, then closing the year with John Ratnavale in July, August and September.  With the experience each of them brings to the office, it will be smooth.

Past President Jim Aylor will be this year’s Vice President, Pat Tiede serving again as Secretary and Past President Gary Boswell, Treasurer.  The Bethesda club has a strong cadre of past officers who support our club and in this case step forward to lead once again. The Board of directors includes 2008-2010 Gary Boswell, John Ratnavale and Dick Ruprecht and for 2008-2009 Susan Kirk, Jim Leder, Shira Oler and Debbie Van Horn

This will also be an opportunity year to strengthen and build the development of newer Kiwanians to prepare to assume future club leadership roles. We all bring our business and personal experiences to our organization.  When we add our knowledge of Kiwanis to our personal skills and understand that we can “change the world one child and one community at a time”, it will lead to a stronger community and world together.  Now let’s take a look at the photos of the evening:
