Serving the Community Since 1945

Meeting Date: September 25, 2008

President Liz Quinn opened the meeting with the Pledge, singing of My Country 'Tis of Thee, and a prayer from past director Joe Healy.  Joe now lives in Bethany Beach and this is his first visit to our club since we’ve been at Tragara Ristorante.  Other guests were introduced, Alana Gardner, Division 1 Lt. Governor Designate. Alana lives and works in this area and we hope to see her at more of our functions.  It was good to see Bob Gradle and Past President John Ratnavale again.

Announcements:

Be sure to sign up for our dinner on October 2 at Alfio’s. We will be inducting the new officers for 2008-2009 as well as a new member. Call Pat Tiede at 301-493-6937 for your reservations. Payment and choice of entrée must be made by the end of September. The Golf Tournament was a tremendous success—thanks to all who participated.  Dues are now due.  Save a stamp and bring your dues payment check to the next meeting. Jeanne Smith has tickets for the Wheaton-Silver Spring Pancake Breakfast being held on October 11.

Happy Dollars:

Since our editor George Patterson was unable to attend the meeting, and take his usual fine notes, the format for presentation of happy dollars will be different:  Contributing HAPPY DOLLARS were Bill Hague, Bernadeen Zivkovic, Liz Quinn, Bob Gradle, Alana Gardner, Bob Quinn, Pat Tiede, Dick Ruprecht, John Ratnavale, Jeanne Smith, and Joe Healy.

Recipients of HAPPY DOLLARS were Liz Quinn for an outstanding term as President, her assistance on the golf tournament which made over $14,000.  She also received lovely flowers from her husband.  Joe Healy who has been very active in the club but now is very active on the town council of Bethany Beach.  The YMCA Family Fun Day held last Sunday netted over $6,500.  Pat Tiede for all the extras she does.

There was no speaker and a Board Meeting followed the next hour.

Bob Gradle won the 50/50 and donated it to the House fund.

NEWS FROM THE 35TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

 SEPTEMBER 26, 2008

Dr. Jim Leder was surprised with a presentation of a Capital District Kiwanis Foundation, Founder’s Society Award at the 35th Annual Bethesda Kiwanis Golf Classic dinner at Bretton Woods Golf Course, Potomac, Maryland.  “Dr. No”, as he is sometimes known in jest, is for his gruff, pointed insistence that “you will play and bring friends to the tournament.”  It works.  He has been the chair of the golf outing for over thirty years and has spearheaded raising almost a million dollars, he reckons by the tournaments.  Jim is a Bethesda Club Past President, Past Lieutenant Governor of Division 17, and Chairman of a new exciting project THE MIRACLE LEAGUE.  He is always active in Kiwanis projects.

The Golf Tournament is the major fund raiser for the Club with proceeds going to the Suburban Hospital Pediatric Center and other club charities.  Robert Quinn was the chair of this year's successful tournament.  The Bethesda Club honored him with this recognition and Past Governor Bob Cressy, his friend for over thirty years, made the presentation.  What a great way to say “Thanks, Jim!”
