SPEAKER:

Our own Sue Kirk, Executive Director of Bethesda Cares (BC) talked about the mission of   BC which is to prevent families from becoming homeless and to work with homeless families to get them into a home. One hard-to-believe number is that the Federal Government considers a single person who makes more than $10,000 a year to be above the poverty line. Difficult to imagine how anyone making $10,000 could live in this county. Another sad figure is that the average age of homeless people in the US is about 9 years old and Sue confirms this is about right for Bethesda.  BC always sees a surge in  clients in April as PEPCO and Washington Gas are allowed to discontinue utilities for non payment (they can't do this in the winter because people would freeze) and BC can provide funds to help families with their utility bills.

Sue was asked what to do when you are approached on the street by someone asking for money. She said that most street people in Bethesda are alcoholics and rather than give them money she distributed cards listing dates/locations of free meals. Liz presented Sue with a check for $5500 from our Foundation.

Pat Tiede won the 50/50 and donated it back to the club.

Bill Pennington won a drawing for fresh tomatoes.
