Kee-Notes
President Liz Quinn opened our meeting with the Pledge, singing of My Country 'Tis of Thee and John Walker delivered the prayer.
Announcements:
President Liz Quinn welcomed our guests Cody Burton, his mother Suzanne Burton and the faculty advisor of Blair High School Key Club Mary Ann Dvorsky. Also great to see Robbie Brewer, Scott Brewer and Pat Norry who have been away from the club meetings. We had a good attendance today.
Mary Anne Dvorsky was inducted into our club as an Honorary Member. She is a teacher at Montgomery Blair High school (computer science) and faculty representative for the Key Club. Mary Ann related how the Key Club at Blair was started four years ago without realizing that they should have a Kiwanis member to sponsor them. So Jeanne Smith contracted her and has provided needed leadership and advice to the club.

Pat Norry 5 HD glad to be back. Shira Oler HD for her recent trip to the beach and for her upcoming trip to Israel. Also another HD for his wife Liz. Bob Gradle HD for Shira's upcoming trip. Pat Tiede HD for our speaker. Bob Cressy reminded us about the upcoming District Convention in Richmond and another HD for Cody. Jeanne Smith HD for Cody and his mom. Debbie Van Horn HD glad to be back. Speaker:
Our
speaker was Cody Burton, Teenager of the Year nominated by
our club and also winner of Division 17 Teen of the Year. His
list of accomplishments is profound. He is an Eagle Scout,
National Merit Semifinalist and has over a thousand hours of
community service as a volunteer EMT (Emergency Medical Team) with
Sandy Spring Fire Department. One of his interests as been first
aid and he thought that being a lifeguard would be a way to put
those skills to use. But as a lifeguard he quickly realized that
most of the time you just sit in a chair whirling a whistle around.
He then volunteered as an EMT and has loved it and has taken classes
to become a certified EMT. The camaraderie of the volunteers at the
department- blue collar workers, business owners, government workers
is very close and supportive.
In honor of Cody's outstanding efforts, the club presented a $500 gift card to the Princeton University book store. Cody wants to pursue engineering.
Pat Norry won the 50/50 and contributed back to the House Fund.
