SPEAKER OF THE DAY:

Our speaker was Laurie Herscher, M.D, Director of Radiation Oncology at Suburban Hospital. She talked about  dietary risk factors for cancer. Cancer is an overgrowth of cells. Somehow the DNA of the cells directs this overgrowth but we are not sure exactly how that occurs. Some external factor can influence the DNA and one modifiable risk factor is diet.  Things to limit include sugary drinks, grilling fatty meats, smoked or salted meats, fatty foods. In short anything that tastes good!! Factors to strive for include maintaining lean weight, exercise 30 minutes per day, eat lots of fruits and vegetables like your mother told you. Dark chocolate is OK in small amount. Limit alcohol to two drinks per day for men, one day for women. Dietary supplements are not recommended other than a one a day multivitamin.  High doses of Beta Carotene (Vitamin A) have been shown to increase chance of lung cancer.

Greg Miele won the 50/50.
